Apex domain and www redirect

I successfully setup my domain and it is available at like https://myapp.com. However, www.myapp.com doesn't work and i get a misdirected request error. I am using IONOS as my domain registrar but I'm not sure how to do the forwarding from www. to the apex domain. I used an A record for the apex entry.

I don't know if this would be the real solution. I have the same issue now that I saw your post, but I would suppose that maybe you also need to add a record for www.myapp.com. In DNS (on your host), I saw that there is a record for myapp.com and one for www.myapp.com as well, the same record, but for each one. I would try this.

Noticed that A records are more "sensible", you can try adding a CNAME for the www.myapp.com

Thanks for your reply! I can't add a CNAME pointing to the root as that somehow interfers with the Brevo DNS records (email).
  • I also tried url forwarding within IONOS but that messed up everything

Do we have to add www.myapp.com ad domain in toddle too?

    No
  • Shouldn't have to
  • Whatever you're using to manage your DNS should allow you to do a 301 redirect and generally that should be it πŸ€”

In my DNS the www is redirected correctly to non WWW but still having this issue. The tech guys from my domain, checked and is all right on the server, recommended to ask to Team toddle if there are some extra steps to do for adding WWW or maybe is something from their side.

@Janis, is should be like this, A record name is myapp.com. TTL 14400 (this is what I have) - type: A - Record the IP from toddle. In CNAME you have to add www.myapp.com TTL 14400 type CNAME Record add myapp.com.

I'm not sure if TTL change for you, but is you server generates something different just use what generates for TTL.

Just a quick update regarding my case, it doesn’t work with 'www.' I’m not sure if the issue is on my server or with Toddle, but everything is set up correctly on my server. I contacted support and double-checked everything, and it all seems fine.

Hey again, I just checked my site again and I'm almost there. I managed to set the redirect but when i type in www. i get a "this page is unsecure" warning. But at least it is redirecting - so on to the next step trying to solve the https issue

Mee too. And also I have checked all certificates and all are right (new generated). I also redirected to HTTPS which is the secure one but nothing.

Hej @Erik Beuschau hvordan har du det? Hope it's okay that I tag you directly πŸ™ @unicodes and I are both struggling with setting up a custom domain for our projects. We both managed to do it for the apex domain with an A record, but we cant figure out how to redirect www. to the apex one. Would it be possible that you or someone else from toddel takes a quick look. Tusind tak!

I think it's working now for me. With IONOS, I had to manually create the www. subdomain, then configure the redirect and set up a seperate ssl certificate for the www subdomain. not sure if that is how it's supposed to work, but for now it's seems to redirect just fine

Hey guys! I think you might be overcomplicating things 😊
  • You don't need a redirect. You can add two domains to your toddle app:
    apex and www

    ❀️1
  • max.kayr-1347507822384123994

    Then two DNS entries:
    A record to apex
CNAME record for the www one
    1347507822182662226-image.png
  • Toddle (Cloudflare) will then generate the SSL certificates. This can take a few minutes

  • Now that Toddle supports A records, it has become quite easy and you don't need to redirect anymore
